THE LATEST ON THE MIND & CANVAS OF CARLOS KHALI

The summer of 2025 marked a turning point in the development of Khali’s work. He has abruptly pivoted from his distinctive mixture of text, symbolism, and abstract expressionism. Currently, the artist is creating pseudo-minimalist work, focusing on color, emotion, and intuition. Though nonrepresentational in composition, titles of the pieces are noun-heavy and descriptive, giving the viewer a sense of what’s happening within each work of art.

Up to this point, much of Khali’s work has been deemed “not fit for public consumption” by the artist himself. The current style is a noticeable deviation from a familiar creative norm. The subtle blend of smooth gradients and textured surfaces add a refreshing notion of charm and sophistication to Khali’s latest artwork. There’s an air of things being open to interpretation present, an element previously missing from the artist’s portfolio.

Sans commentary and explicit imagery, the ambiguity of the paintings elicit potential to be appreciated by a broader audience. For those of us familiar with Khali’s work, we might find ourselves asking why he has moved away from a proven formula for success. A surprising pivot, as his unique aesthetic and message-laden paintings have started gaining some notoriety in shows and galleries throughout the greater Seattle area.
